This Halloween I haven't really made any plans but Matt and I did carve two pumpkins for my parents house yesterday. We made a little competition out of it, I think Matt won. I went on Martha Stewart yesterday morning and was making plans to go all out, and then decided just to keep it simple, so I finished at least half an hour before Matt did. He spent ages carving out teeth! But it was all in good fun. Sometimes I think the best part about holidays is all the kid stuff! Today I'm going to curl up indoors (it's a very gray, rainy day in the lower mainland) and watch The Halloween Tree! It's a cartoon Halloween movie based off the book by Ray Bradbury and it's awesome. I really hope they release it on DVD or iTunes someday.
And as a seasonal treat after the carving was done, I made Sweet and Spicy Pumpkin Seeds using this recipe from The Hazel Bloom. They are delicious!
For anyone who wants to try it, I would recommend keeping the mixture heated while mixing in the pumpkin seeds to avoid the serious clumping and hardening that occurs after the sugary mixture is removed from heat. This happened to me but I just put the saucepan back on the element and melted it down again while mixing in the pumpkin seeds.
